Day: your panels generate clean energy and charge the battery.
Night: the battery powers your lights, fan and TV. Without a battery, net metering offsets the grid power you use.

Straight answers about cost, subsidies, sizing and what happens next.
Read the full subsidy guideHow much does rooftop solar installation cost in Tamil Nadu?
The cost depends on the system size, the module type (DCR modules are required for the central subsidy), the mounting structure, your roof and the components chosen. Our calculator gives an indicative estimate based on your electricity use and shows the rate it assumes. An accurate price needs a site assessment and a written quotation. For eligible homes, central assistance under PM Surya Ghar reduces the amount you pay.
Can I receive a government subsidy for my home?
Individual households with a valid electricity connection may be eligible for central assistance under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana — ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, up to ₹78,000. The system must be grid-connected with net metering, use DCR modules and be installed by a vendor registered on the national portal. Eligibility is decided by the government and your DISCOM, and the assistance is paid to you after commissioning. Always confirm on the official portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
Can central and Tamil Nadu subsidies be combined?
The TNPDCL rooftop solar portal lists a Tamil Nadu top-up — ₹5,000 for 1 kW, ₹10,000 for 2 kW and ₹22,000 for 3 kW and above, for residential systems up to 10 kW — designed to work alongside PM Surya Ghar and released after the central assistance. The portal shows the Government Order as pending, so we treat the top-up as provisional and do not include it in our net-cost estimates until it is confirmed. Check www.tnebltd.gov.in/usrp for the latest position.
How do I calculate the right solar system size?
Start with your annual electricity use from your bills, then divide by how much 1 kW of panels generates where you live — roughly 1,450 units a year in the Kanyakumari district under typical, unshaded conditions. Your usable roof area (about 100 sq ft of shade-free space per kW on a concrete roof), shading and your sanctioned load also limit the size. Our calculator does this for you and lists every assumption it uses.
Will solar panels power my house at night?
Not directly — panels only generate in daylight. With a grid-connected system and net metering, the surplus your panels export during the day is set off against the grid electricity you use at night, which is how most homes save. If you want your own system to power the house at night or during outages, you need a hybrid system with battery storage, which costs more.
How long does it take to recover the installation cost?
It depends on your consumption, your tariff slab, the system cost and the assistance you receive. In Tamil Nadu, domestic consumers already receive some free units each billing cycle, so homes with lower consumption save less in rupees than high-consumption homes. Our calculator estimates a simple payback period from your inputs, and tells you when a payback period cannot be estimated. We do not promise fixed savings.
What happens after I request a consultation?
A member of our team contacts you by your preferred method to understand your electricity use and your property. We then talk through suitable system options, indicative costs and the schemes that may apply, and — if you wish — arrange a site assessment before any quotation. Sending the form does not commit you to anything.
